Details of the CA14R Speaker pictured in American Black Walnut:-

The CA14R is a 2 way ported stand mounting loudspeaker which has been carefully developed to give a very high quality sound reproduction.

To optimise performance careful sound measurements both outside and inside the cabinet have been made and combined with extensive listening to all types of music.

Unique Cabinet Shape:-

Most HiFi speakers use rectangular cabinets to contain the sound generated inside. This shape is cheap to produce but results in standing waves being generated by the parallel faces of the cabinet. Standing waves build up and decay more slowly than music signals and some of the standing wave signals are radiated by the cabinet colouring sound reproduction.

Some designs use tapered sides to reduce standing waves however the taper needs to be large to be fully effective.

We have developed a five sided cabinet design which dramatically reduces standing waves resulting in improved sound reproduction.

Cabinet Volume:-

Cabinet panels resonate and radiate undesirable sounds and generally speaking this is worst with bigger panels, so small speakers are better in this regard.

However larger cabinet volume allows more bass extension to be obtained, a balance therefore is needed when choosing a cabinet volume.

Our CA14R speaker has a volume of 15 litres resulting in a good balance of the above factors.

The 19mm MDF cabinet is carefully damped to reduce resonance's without dulling the sound quality.

Drive Units:-

Our CA14R speakers use very high quality drive units.

The bass/mid range unit is manufactured by Audax and constructed with a woven carbon fibre cone and die cast chassis. It produces well damped bass with a natural mid range.

The tweeter used is the Vifa Ring Radiator, its unique design results in a very smooth on and off axis response with a wide frequency range from 500 Hz to beyond 40KHz.

Crossover:-

Drive units produce their best sound quality over a narrower range than their full frequency range. To get the best sound quality crossover filters are used these also allow an overall flat frequency response to be attained. The crossover filter design also influences phase response and damping of the drive units.

The drive units employed in our CA14R speaker have an approximate 4 octave overlap in their frequency response. This overlap is more than many designs and allows the crossover filters to effectively attenuate the extremes of the drive unit responses.

Our CA14R speaker uses 2nd order crossover filters that ensures that the drive units are in phase over the full crossover region. We have been able to use a crossover frequency of 2KHz, which is lower than many designs. It results in a better off axis response.

The crossover is hard wired using silver loaded solder and the woofer/tweeter filters are physically separated to minimise any undesirable interaction. Audio grade polypropylene capacitors are used and the main inductor is wound from Oxygen Free copper wire.

The CA14R is bi-wireable allowing the use of separate speaker cables and/or amplifiers for the speaker drive units.
